Canning Town developed and grew during Queen Victoria’s reign for several reasons. Firstly, the railway that was built between Stratford and North Woolwich in 1846. Secondly, the new industries which established themselves along the eastern edge of the River Lea.

These factories took advantage of the relaxed planning laws in the area and the good transport links provided by the railway and the docks.
