Life in Canning Town has often been very hard for many people. At different times, and to differing degrees, Canning Town people have experienced poverty, unemployment and poor living conditions. Because of this there are various ways in which local people have tried to make life better for themselves.

One way in which local people have tried to improve their living and working conditions was by forming trade unions and becoming involved in politics. Another important local tradition is the presence of philanthropic institutes and settlements  which existed to help the poor. This was particularly important before the council became established as a provider of local houses and services.
